Ivan akansiima is a multi-talented (piano, bass, acoustic guitar, drums), naturally gifted and self taught musician from Uganda East Africa currently living in the state of Michigan U.S.A. He begun playing music at age 7 as a drummer for his church in 1994 in his home town of Jinja. His musicianship has undergone an experience of over 18 years of playing and performing as an accompanist and solo act in churches, concert halls, music festivals, parties, jazz clubs, events, art centers, and schools all over 40 countries. His first music influence came from African indigenous drum rhythms from his ancestral music roots of banyoro and basoga, then later in his mid teenage years was introduced to western music through listening to local radio stations that played genres like R&B, rock, ballads, soul, pop, Afro folk, and Gospel. In his late teenage years his cousin had a collection of Black Gospel jazz albums by artists such as Kirk Franklin,Mary Mary, Donnie Mcclurkin, John P Kee, Fred Hammond, Commissioned, Take 6, and Hezekiah Walker that he allowed Ivan to listen to which improved Ivan's drumming skills and musicianship in the late 90s. Then in the early 2000's Ivan was introduced to jazz by a friend who made him a collection cd of Bebop jazz artists ( Wes Montegomery, Charlie Parker, Pat Martino, Bud Powell, Joe Pass,Dizzy Gilliespie, George Benson) that ivan passionately loved and listened to diligently for hours everyday and focused on learning and understanding jazz music and its various styles. Ivan is currently a music student and band leader of a jazz trio called "TRITONES" at Lake Michigan Community College in Benton Harbor, Michigan U.S.A pursing his music associates degree and hopes to transfer to a Jazz institution to purse advanced studies in Jazz performance.
